Seasonal Skin Change: Time to Refresh your Skincare Routine

As the leaves change and the air becomes crisper, we switch out our summer dresses for cozy sweaters, and our summer lipsticks for richer, autumnal shades. What about our skincare routines, though? Do they also deserve a seasonal refresh? Dermatologists Kiran Mian DO, FAAD and Omer Ibrahim MD, FAAD weigh in on the question of whether our skincare routines should follow a calendar.

Does your skin react to the change in seasons? Our skin is constantly changing climate, from the humidity of summer to winter’s chill. Dr. Ibrahim explains how our skin’s production of sebum increases in spring and summer. This leads to clogged pore and acne. Winter’s dry, cold air can dehydrate our skin, causing irritations and eczema.

Should our skincare be adapted to the seasons? The answer to this question is a resounding “yes”. As we change our wardrobes, so should our skincare. In the fall, we may use richer moisturizers in order to combat dryness. Winter requires heavy-duty hydration in order to lock in moisture. Spring brings lighter textures for managing excess oil. Summer calls for oil control and sun protection.

How can our routines be tailored? Dr. Ibrahim recommends switching to water- or gel-based moisturizers during the warmer months, and doubling up on hydration during the colder months. Shea butter, coconut oils, and squalane are great ingredients to use during the dry season. Lighter cleansers and scrubs can help those with acne or oily skin keep their pores clear.

Listen to your skin, and then respond accordingly. You wouldn’t wear a heavy coat in the summer, nor would you apply heavy creams on a sunny day. Your skin will thank for the attention.

What’s the takeaway? Your skincare routine shouldn’t be set in stone. It should change with the seasons. By adapting products to the weather you are not only treating your skin, but also nurturing its health and preventing any damage.

“Embrace nature’s rhythm with a skincare regimen that responds to its call. Keep your skin in harmony and balance with the world around. “
